Edelman & Thompson 2017 Sponsorships

Ban Johnson Amateur Baseball League

The League’s summer baseball program featured many of Kansas City’s top college players and celebrated its 90th birthday this year. Edelman & Thompson sponsored a team in this program and was excited to see them place second in the league.

Kansas City T-Bones Baseball Club

Edelman & Thompson sponsored the T-Bones’ Hits for Heroes program for the fourth consecutive year. We gave $10 to the VFW for each T-Bones hit at home games this season, which brought this year’s donation to $4,080 and our total donations to over $15,000.

AIDS Walk

All money raised at the AIDS Walk stays in Kansas City and benefits several organizations that provide services and resources for the more than 5,700 Kansas Citians affected by HIV/AIDS. We were pleased to sponsor this year’s walk, which raised over $529,000.

CCVI Trolley Run

All funds raised from the Trolley Run benefit the local Children’s Center for the Visually Impaired (CCVI). We enjoyed sponsoring this event and supporting CCVI’s mission to enable children who are blind or visually impaired to achieve their full potential in the sighted world.

March of Dimes – March for Babies and Bikers for Babies

The March of Dimes walk/run and motorcycle ride raise awareness of premature birth, birth defects and infant mortality. Bikers for Babies passed a new milestone this year – KC bikers have now raised more than $9 million over the past 23 years! We were proud to sponsor these events and help give every baby a fighting chance.

Heart & Stroke Walk/5K Run

The American Heart Association’s mission is to build healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke. We were proud to endorse this mission, and were also pleased that this year’s Walk/5K Run raised over $660,000 to help fight heart disease and stroke!

Amy Thompson Run for Brain Injury

Since the first run in honor of Amy Thompson was held in 1988, more than $1.5 million has been raised to help people with brain injuries. We were pleased to sponsor this year’s run and advocate for brain injury awareness and prevention while honoring the memory of a remarkable young woman.

Royals Charities 5K Run/Walk

Royals Charities supports Kansas City in many ways by benefiting children, education, youth baseball/softball and the military. We were proud to sponsor an organization that does so much good for our community, and were excited to see more than $120,000 raised in support of their mission.

Olathe Criterium

We were pleased to sponsor the Olathe Criterium cycling race, and were very proud to see one of our attorneys, Brett Coppage, finish 11th in his category!

Walk to Defeat ALS

We support the ALS Association’s mission to treat and cure ALS through global research and nationwide advocacy, while also empowering those affected by the disease to live fuller lives by providing them compassionate care and support. Donations to the walk far surpassed the event goal of $435,000!

Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure

It was an honor to join Susan G. Komen in their fight to save lives and end breast cancer forever. 75% of net proceeds from the race stayed right here in KC to help fund programs including screening, diagnostics and treatment services. The other 25% will fund national research efforts.

American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk

The American Cancer Society has played a crucial part in the discovery of many breast cancer treatments, and money raised from this walk could go towards the discovery of more lifesaving developments. We’re proud to endorse their efforts in research, risk reduction, early detection and providing resources to patients and caregivers.

Attorneys James Thompson and Mike White of Edelman & Thompson, obtained a $2.24 million jury verdict for their client on a serious automobile collision case in Kansas City. The police officer, relying on the defendant’s statement, originally pinned the fault on our client because she struck the rear corner of the defendant’s car. Unfortunately, at the scene, she was unable to give a statement due to her severe injuries. Despite the fact that our client insisted the defendant turned abruptly in front of her, the defendant and his insurance company refused to take responsibility for her injuries.

SideBySide

With the assistance of an accident reconstruction expert, James and Mike were able to convince the jury that the defendant was primarily at fault in causing the crash. In addition, James and Mike introduced the testimony of our client’s treating physician and provided documentation of her medical bills which led to the substantial jury verdict. “For Edelman and Thompson, there was real satisfaction in winning such a sizable verdict for our client because of the devastating injuries she sustained, the medical bills she incurred and the fact that she may never be able to work again,” said James Thompson, partner, Edelman & Thompson. “These kinds of cases remind us that the American judicial system provides the opportunity to balance the scales of justice and right wrongs, no matter how powerful the opponent.”

More than $207,000 raised for local charities.

Kansas City Royals fans have been treated to an exciting season of baseball this year, and these grateful fans are paying it forward by supporting the Royals Charities’ 50/50 raffle in a big way. So far this season, more than $414,000 has been raised, with half that amount going to local charities and the other half to the lucky fans holding the winning ticket at each of the Royals’ home games. Edelman & Thompson has been proud to partner with Royals Charities this season and thanks every fan who went to the ballpark and supported this effort.

The courage to make our communities safer – and better
by James Thompson and Ron Edelman
Partners, Edelman & Thompson

Too often it takes a tragedy to bring to light unsafe practices that need changing: a child drowns in a swimming pool, an infant pulls over a small dresser, an exhausted truck driver crosses the yellow line, a woman is left unattended in a hospital bathroom.

For over 20 years, the attorneys at Edelman & Thompson have helped our clients and their families tell their stories and bring about changes so that other families need not suffer the same injury. Our clients have had the courage to speak out and make something positive for others out of the tragedies they have endured. It’s been our privilege to fight alongside our clients to make our communities safer – and better.

Some of our serious injury cases have brought about changes in the law, changes in industry practices and changes at individual workplaces. It’s one of the tremendous satisfactions of our role as attorneys to join with our clients to bring about these kinds of meaningful changes.

Not every case we take breaks new ground or sets new legal precedents, but every case makes a difference in the lives of our patients and their families.

Over the years, the lawyers at Edelman & Thompson have won numerous multimillion-dollar settlements and verdicts for the clients we represent. Partner James Thompson is a member of the exclusive Multi-Million Dollar Advocates Forum, limited to attorneys who have achieved multi-million dollar verdicts and settlements.

The fact that our firm has successfully handled so many major cases and verdicts is one measure of our attorneys’ ability to handle serious injury cases and complex litigation.

Here is a partial list of major settlements and verdicts.

  • $8.5 million product liability
  • $7.2 million pool drowning
  • $5.1 million asbestos claim
  • $4.6 million truck accident
  • $2.75 million premises liability
  • $2.2 million work injury truck accident
  • $2.0 million truck accident

Edelman & Thompson is launching a new ad campaign focused on the dangers of distracted driving. The ads bring home the dangers caused on the road by drivers focused on texting and phone calls rather than safe driving.

Partner James Thompson said, “When I started practicing law 26 years ago, the drunk driver was the most dangerous on the road. Now, it’s the distracted driver. All too often the serious injury clients we represent have had their lives changed forever because of another driver’s cell phone use. If you’ve been injured in an auto accident, give us a call. If the other driver was on the phone or texting, we’ll find out – and that driver will be held responsible. It’s our community. Let’s all work to make it safer.”

Edelman & Thompson has 5 locations in the Kansas City, Missouri & Kansas City, Kansas.
